The city is also known as "city of canals" taking inspiration from the well networked water bodies connecting the 117 small islands spread across the Venetian Lagoon. The New york Times rated Venice as the most beautiful city build by man and Times Online called it the most romantic place to visit. Buildings border the canals on both sides, most of them multi coloured and adds to the beauty of the place. Most amazing fact is that the buildings are built on the wood piles brought from Slovenia and Croatia. In that sense Venice is also known as a floating city. Lack of oxygen under water prevents the corrosion but the city holds the threat of sinking due to the construction of artesian wells, which later was banned in 1960. Studies now show that the city is no longer sinking. Tourism contributes heavily to the economy of the City with 50000 visitors per day and is one of the most sought after tourist destinations. Jog Falls - Sharavathi's Smile

Jog falls is  an amazement hidden beneath the green covers of Sahyadri ranges in Karnataka. It is also one of the highest water falls in India.

Here is a basic road map to Jog falls.

The journey from "Gokarna,"  is through the national high way No.17 towards South till we reach Honavar. Jog falls are about 57 Km east from Honavar. Almost 40 Kms journey from Honovar is through dense forests. In order to enjoy the journey to the fullest one should travel slowly catching the glimpse of live streams and pleasant scenes Sahyadri offers for its visiors. Quite often peacocks, deers and langurs appear in groups. There are a few "view points" en route to catch the view of the beautiful Sharavathi river flowing out of the misty mountains. If we travel savoring the entire beauty of the nature, it could probably take a three and half hours journey before reaching the Jog falls.

The place has few buildings and rest houses build in-line with the nature.  For the visitors Karnataka Government has build a number of view points. They are railed and fenced for the travelers to get a complete view of the falls from all possible angles.

The locals call the falls by the names "Gadagudi" and "Gersopa".

Four falls make the Jog falls -- Raja, Rani, Rocket and Roarer. Mightiest of all is the "Raja". The one which falls through several rock catchments, emerging with a roar is known as "Roarer." The one which resemble the stream of white smoke let out by rocket is called the "Rocket."  And finally the "Rani" which flows down gently.

The falls are more attractive during the rainy season. The mist, rain and sunlight creates varieties of dimensions to the scenes . Though the falls look close to each other from the view point, they are much farther than one would assume. The "Raja"  falls at a distance of 2 Km from "Rani."

For a complete feel one has to take a closer look of the falls. The falls are actually at a distance from the hawkers and tourist guides at the view point. They are almost 2 km from the view point through a much dangerous path. However a parking is available there. There is an old  British mansion of the renaissance age and a building half complete. Raja falls from below a huge rock. We can climb the rock and look down to watch the fall below our toes. View from the rock is a spine chilling experience. Other falls are also visible from this rock, all falling in great pride and into such an incredible depth below.

The "Linganomokki dam" reduces the water flow during the summer and this is when it is not raining . So monsoon is the best season to visit the place. Bon Voyage.
